Health chief Neale Fong blocked search for emails

In an extraordinary move, they were given to the media almost three hours before the Opposition, which had requested them under Freedom of Information. Mr McGinty said he had made everything public to "take away the opportunity for the Opposition to milk the emails for more than they are worth".

The Opposition, which was charged $300 for its FOI search, was left fuming. Three weeks ago, Opposition Leader Troy Buswell used an earlier batch of FOI documents to embarrass Mr McGinty by showing he rewrote a media statement for Dr Fong to play down his contact with Mr Burke. One of the emails released yesterday from Colin Xanthis, who was co-ordinating the department's FOI search, asked Dr Fong for approval to search his personal email files "to satisfy the current FOI request". Dr Fong replied 16 minutes later: "No." Another email between two officers, whose names were deleted, showed the lax approach initially taken by the department.

Trying to Figure Out How to Put a Google In Every Data Center

Google No. 1 has required many years of work to get up and running, along with millions of dollars of equipment and countless hours of mental toil by some of the computer industry's brainiest folks.

But Google No. 2 you might be able to build yourself in a spare weekend.

That's one way of thinking about a research project at the University of California, Berkeley, being funded, as it happens, by Google, among others. The researchers aren't interested in finding the secret behind Google's search algorithms. Instead, Armando Fox, a computer scientist and director of the RAD Lab project at Berkeley, and his team are trying to take the mystery out of Google's data centers.

These data centers are the engines that run Google's search software; Yahoo, Microsoft and Amazon have their own.

EPISO lets public grill candidates on issues

We vote and we have the right to ask for public services," said Victor Chavez, an EPISO leader from La Resurreccion church who told the candidates about the lack of sewage services and unsanitary conditions in his neighborhood. "We can let the candidates know we count."

The candidates for commissioner of Precinct 1 in the Democratic primary election are Anna Perez, Tomas Rey and incumbent Luis SariƱana. Candidates for the Precinct 3 seat are Willie Gandara Jr., Frank Lopez, Alexandro Lozano, Rogelio Lozoya and Irma Sanchez.

Lozoya did not attend the event.

Only Democratic primary candidates were gathered. Republican challenger for the Precinct 1 seat, Alex Mendoza, also was not present.

Every candidate for the commissioners seats answered "yes" to all the questions asked by EPISO, but Perez had the only "no" answer of the afternoon.

American Standard finishes year with Trane ride

It has been anything but a standard year for American Standard.

The Piscataway-based company completed the sale of its renowned bath and kitchen business and spun off its vehicle-control systems operation to focus solely on its more-profitable air-conditioning and heating systems.

And Wednesday, it completed its three-way business split by announcing its name change to Trane, to identify with its popular HVAC brand.

"Everyone has been clearly focused on the separation plan, and we're in the final stages," company spokesman Skip Colcord said.

It was February when American Standard Chief Executive Officer Fred Poses announced that the company, which employs about 1,450 in New Jersey, would separate into three units in the hopes of creating greater shareholder value for its varied operations.

Firefighters Gain Ground As Santa Ana Winds Decrease

Helicopters and air tankers dropped 30 to 35 loads of water on two fires that have burned hundreds of homes in the San Bernardino Mountains, near Lake Arrowhead.

"They're taking it down considerably," said Dennis Bouslaugh of the U.S. Forest Service.

Authorities said they had largely contained many of the fires north of San Diego, and all five fires in Los Angeles County were about 50 percent contained or more.

Despite the progress, none of the six major blazes in San Diego County was more than 15 percent contained, and those fires threatened more than 8,500 houses. The top priority was a fire in San Bernardino County that threatened 6,000 homes and continued to rage out of control.

So far, this week's fires have destroyed about 1,500 homes and burned 674 square miles across five counties, from Ventura in the north all the way into Mexico.
